Field Data Collection Botanist
Position Duration: May-August, 2008 (Redwood National Park) or Position Classification: Seasonal full-time. Functional Responsibility: Assists in the collection of training data. Implements and monitors data collection methods in support of remote sensing/image processing data collection needs. Participates in field data collection activities for the development of ground truth. Knowledgable about GIS, GPS, and field data collection techniques. Operates hand-held data collection and GPS devices. Provides guidance and support to Field Data Collection Technicians. Responsible for identification of plant species within the specific project area. Responsible for the collection and identification of unknown plant species. Runs QA/QC routines and resolves field data inconsistencies. Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Botany, Plant Ecology, or related field desired or in progress, or AA degree required. Minimum Experience: Educational background or equivalent experience in Forestry, Botany, Plant Ecology, or a related field. At least 2-5 years of experience in plant identification and field data collection techniques. Knowledge of "local" plant species required. Applicants must be able to meet the demands of a busy workload of field data collection activities and be capable of backpacking, camping, and cross-country hiking as necessary to sample field sites and carry supplies; must work well in a team environment and be willing to go on an adventure; must be able to qualify for GRS auto insurance coverage; and must be tolerant of inclement weather, poison oak, bee stings, insect bites, and other potential unfortunate natural incidents that may occur in the field. |
