Spatial Data Adjustment and Validation

GRS was contracted by CSX Realty to improve the spatial accuracy of existing CSX GIS data.  The original CSX GIS data consisted of over 35,000 scanned Valuation Maps and corresponding vector themes derived from these scanned maps.

Due to compounding errors of the prior CSX update process the original data were up to 800 feet from their true ground location. GRS developed software and implemented a workflow to adjust the GIS themes and raster images to an accuracy suitable for CSX applications.

GRS created a set of control points for each image that identify “from” and “to” locations of known features.  High resolution (1m) panchromatic imagery, road/railroad data, and Track Geometry Car data were used to identify the destination position of the contol features. Extensive quality control procedures were implemented by GRS.  Changes in displacement and feature distortion resulting from the adjustment were continually monitored.  If necessary, control data were modified and the data reprocessed to until the data met the project mapping standards.
