For 11 years GRS had been either the primary or secondary conversion contractor for the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans). GRS was awarded a series of annual indefinite quantity contracts for digitizing drafted topographic maps into a MicroStation format from any of the ten district offices in California. These projects required GRS cartographers and technicians to interpret over 78 feature types in 10 categories during the capture of the highly detailed large scale topographic sheets using manual digitizing and scanning techniques.
These maps ranged in scale from 1":20' to 1":50', and were typically densely populated with cultural and topographic features. Menus, commands, and post processing programs for linear patterning were developed to increase data capture efficiency. GRS also provided data conversion and projection capabilities that include the transformation of existing digital base map data from the NAD27 to NAD83 datum, as well as conversion to metric specifications. Routines were developed for datum and metric conversions, and map transformations.
GRS completed over 85 projects under these contracts. All projects were completed on time and within budget. Highly effective GRS quality control procedures resulted in a 99.99% acceptance rate of projects upon initial delivery with no need for further map revisions.
